SuperBowl 49

Today is a big day for football fans and players. Today is Super Bowl 49. Your team may be playing in the Super Bowl. Congratulations! But let’s dig into this a little bit. Let’s look at this 12 number. Tom Brady’s football # is 12, Seattle Seahawks claimed last year to have a 12th man (fans) But when thinking of the number 12, first comes to mind… the 12 disciples. So it’s 12 vs. 12th man.

Does God care who wins the Super Bowl? Probably not. But He care, if you win or lose to praise and worship no matter what. We know, the media doesn’t interview the losers, but the winners instead. Personally, my football team did not make it. But who am I cheering for? Since I have seen both team win the Super Bowl before. I would have to choose the Seattle Seahawks. Why? Because they are unashamed of Jesus! I have seen the New England Patriots win the Super Bowl before and no one mentioned Jesus or anything and the Seattle Seahawks did mention Jesus last year. It’s all about Jesus.

You could say, “so & so is a Christian” example “Drew Brees” I have heard he is a Christian but when he won a Super Bowl he didn’t mention anything, not even, “I thank God.” But you say, you have to mention Jesus to be a Christian, true. But God blessed you with the stage your on, use it for His glory. I have to relate to Matthew 10:33 “But everyone who denies me here on earth, I will also deny before my Father in heaven.”

And looking at time wise, we don’t have much time left on this earth, one day the Holy Spirit will be removed from the earth. So after that, who cares who wins the Super Bowl. But right now, we have the Holy Spirit and we need to cheer Jesus to be heard around the world. Yes there are Christians on the Patriots but their voices may not be heard. Super Bowl is almost a holiday. More people watch the Super Bowl then any other thing. So pray for souls to be saved. If your not cheering for Jesus’ name to be heard, your cheering for your selfish reasons. I admit, being a Cowboy fan I would and have cheered for the opposing team, because I know they would give Jesus all the glory.

The Time is Now!

Listen to the words of this song by Warren Barfield

I cut my teeth, on the back of an old church pew
I learned to walk in the ways of light and truth
And I was told not to speak til I was spoken to
I heard it preached, what I should and I should not do
And the choir sang
Woh oh oh oh oh oh oh Woh oh oh oh oh oh oh

I tried to be a good boy but I ain’t a boy no more
I’ve seen somethings that a man just can’t ignore
And this world’s gone see what I am standing for
I’ve kept my peace, I can’t hold my tongue anymore

You can’t buy my silence, you can’t steal my voice
You can’t keep me quiet, I will bring the noise
Try to beat me down, tell me to shut my mouth
But there’s a time to speak and the time is now
Woh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Woh oh oh oh oh oh oh

The squeaky wheel is always getting greased
Well, I’ve been sitting still
Park here on the side of the street
Always tip-toeing trying not to wake the beast
Oh but here I come
All you monsters had better run from me

You can’t buy my silence, you can’t steal my voice
You can’t keep me quiet, I will bring the noise
Try to beat me down, tell me to shut my mouth
But there’s a time to speak and the time is now
Ooh It’s the time and the time is now
Woh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Woh oh oh oh oh oh oh

You can’t buy my silence, you can’t steal my voice
You can’t keep me quiet, I will bring the noise
Try to beat me down, tell me to shut my mouth
But there’s a time to speak and the time is now

You can’t buy my silence, you can’t steal my voice
You can’t keep me quiet, I will bring the noise
Try to beat me down, tell me to shut my mouth
But there’s a time to speak and the time is now
Woh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Woh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Woh oh oh oh oh oh oh
Woh oh oh oh oh oh oh

Your First 6 Days In Hell

Most vacations include an itinerary. You have an idea what you will see and do before you arrive at your destination. The Bible has enough information to project an itinerary for those whose destination is hell. Let’s look at the first 6 days…

DAY 1

The trip originates at the gate of death. Since departures are made daily, you are called upon to begin your trip on short notice. Since the journey is only one way, there is no need to concern yourself with return plans. Your initial point of departure may prove more than a little frightening as you suddenly realize the finality of your destination. The trip itself will leave you with little time to contemplate what awaits.

As you pass through the doorway of death, you will notice almost immediately that your direction is taking you away from the light toward what appears to be complete and utter darkness. With each passing moment the darkness becomes more intense. At first the absence of light is only annoying, but you feel it becoming more ominous and threatening.

The intensity of the darkness is matched only by the absence of any joyful sounds – no music, no laughter, no sounds of merriment. As you move farther, faint sounds of moaning and wailing become detectable. They seem to be coming through the darkness from every direction. You become aware of a faint light. It flickers like a flame, yet thick clouds of black smoke dance all around it, keeping the flame from casting off any real hope of light,

Suddenly you find yourself obsessed to know what day and hour it is. Already it feels like you’ve been here for an eternity… and it’s only Day 1.

DAY 2

The continuing darkness is stifling. It’s as if something is lurking in the veil of night that surrounds you. You yell, you threaten, you even plead, but to no avail. Whatever it is just stays there, producing fear like you’ve never known before. As your eyes struggle to adjust to the dark, you become aware of a new sensation. The heat. It’s right at the edge of unbearable. Hot, searing, intolerable heat. You crave water. You’d give anything for a drink, and you try unsuccessfully to push that desire out of your mind.

The air is thick, choking, miserable… and it’s only Day 2.

DAY 3

At least you think it’s day 3. It seems as if it has already been forever. You’ve not been able to sleep. You still can’t believe you’re here. Where are the friends you thought you would see? The knowledge that they would be here too had brought you some comfort in your lifetime. Where is the fun you thought you would have? It isn’t at all like what you were led to believe.

You stumble upon a group of others. You pour out a litany of questions. As they open their mouths, no words come out… only the sounds of weeping and wailing. Some in the group don’t even try to respond. They gnash their teeth, as if in some invisible pain. You wonder when this nightmare will end. You wonder why somebody can’t make it stop… and it’s only Day 3.

DAY 4

How you wish you could send a message to those you left behind. You’d warn them about this place. You’d tell them what it’s really like, so they’d never come. The thought of your loved ones coming to a place like this is unbearable. You can’t help but think back upon that day when you made your decision to come here. You understood that your rejection of Jesus meant that you would spend eternity in hell, but it didn’t seem real or important then.

Looking back, you think  how foolish you were to reject God’s offer of salvation. You wish you could choose again. You find yourself hoping that your loved ones will choose differently, even though you realize such a choice means you’ll never see them again… never touch them… never speak to them. What a horrible realization… and it’s only Day 4.

DAY 5

You’ve become acutely aware of the absence of any good in this place. There’s nothing sacred, nothing holy, nothing of God anywhere to be found. You’re amazed at how evil evil can be.

For the first time since your arrival, you begin to sense the great gulf that is fixed between where you are and where God is. The span is beyond your comprehension as you try to realize the degree of distance that will separate you from God and those who chose to serve Him. God is on the other side of that gulf. Loved ones in Christ are on the other side of that gulf. What a lonely realization… and it’s only Day 5.

DAY 6

Through the darkness you saw a new face today. A new arrival. He stopped to speak with you. You could see the terror in his eyes. He asked questions that you had been asking only days before. You opened your mouth to reply, but all that would come out was the sound of weeping and wailing.

You’ve just spent your first 6 days in hell. Unfortunately, an unholy, unhappy eternity stretches out before you… and all because you rejected Jesus. If only…

But wait! The fact you’re reading this says you still have a chance! In His mercy, God is giving you an opportunity right now to change your eternal itinerary. “And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” (Acts 2:21).

Oh, friend, do it now… before it’s too late.

Dear God, I want to never experience the hell I’ve just read about. I confess my sinful thoughts and actions to You right now, and I accept Your Son, Jesus, as my Lord and Savior. I believe He died for my sins and rose again to save me from hell. I claim His free gift of salvation as all I need to live with You for eternity. Amen.

Please contact us, if you have prayed this prayer, we would like to help and encourage you in your new journey with Christ our Lord.

(This scenario is based upon verses found in: Matthew 22:11-13; Mark 9:43; Luke 16:20-31; Revelation 20:14-15.)

3. The Key of Discipleship

The Key of Discipleship – Not Follow up!

You may be called to disciple someone. Christians that have started to walk away from the faith or just need help understanding their walk with Christ may be brought to you. Also, if our Lord has given you the opportunity of seeing someone come to Him, then you may be called to disciple this “Babe in Christ.” Discipleship – “Let the teaching, and admonishing one another…” (Colossians 3:16). Discipleship is critical to the growth and strength of the body of Christ. We are called to help each other to “Live the Life!” Let’s go over some keys to discipleship.

  • Discipleship not “Follow-up” – Discipleship is a long term commitment to helping a fellow Christian grow in Christ. The relationship is typically initiated by the new or growing Christian. Follow-up on the other hand is initiated by a mature Christian or evangelist right after a person comes to Christ. It is meant to make sure that a new Christian is going through with his or her new commitment. Often this done after mass crusades where hundreds of people make an emotional or mental commitment to accepting Christ. Many never follow through and join a good, Bible-based, Christ-centered church. We believe that one cause for this lack of true conversion is the absence of using the Law in evangelism.
  • Disciple a new Christian – A new Christian will be hungry for God’s wisdom and for learning about being a Christian. You will not need to find him. He most likely will be lead to you. That does not mean that you cannot offer to help a new Christian. It just means that if he is truly saved then you should not need to chase after him. Here are some steps to follow in setting up a discipleship meeting.
  1. Set up a definite day and time to meet. Show the person that you are committed to his growth and be prepared with material to discuss.
  2. Pray at the beginning and end of each meeting. Learning to be comfortable when praying with someone else is important. Try to keep the prayers short and simple at first. With the Holy Spirit’s help he will quickly pick up speed and will become comfortable in praying with other people.
  3. A new Christian will have many questions. He may be looking for the depth of your knowledge or may be simply very inquisitive. Let him know that you do not know everything and that you will commit to find out answer to his question. Then do it!
  4. Read the Bible with him. This may sound simple but you will find that your time together will go quickly. You may also notice that he will try to avoid reading the Bible by wanting to talk about your church or religious doctrine or someone he knows that is not saved. These topics are important but reserve time to simply read a chapter or two (a good book to start in is book of John). He may not want to read at first. So you read it but make sure to ask questions so that he has an understanding of what was read. Once he is hooked on the milk of the Word he will never let go!

Now, Go make disciples of all nations!

2. The Key of Being a Witness

The Key of Being a Witness – We are called to be a Witness not just to witness

Witnessing – This is a common term for spreading the Gospel. Paul gives us instructions on how and when to witness. He said to “Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with longsuffering and teaching.” (2 Timothy 4:2) Let’s look at some keys to being a Witness.

  • Earn the right to witness – First you must get to know the person. This is not a superficial kind of getting to know them. A person will quickly turn away from you if they feel you are just trying to fill a quota and not really interested in them. If it is right, the Holy Spirit will let you know when to move on to speaking about the spiritual. Listen for Him!
  • Use Tracts – Tracts are a great bridge from talking about everyday things to the spiritual.
  • Use God’s Ten Commandments – This way you are showing them their sickness (sin) before you give them the cure (Grace). Simply ask if the person has kept the Ten Commandments. They will most likely say yes. Then go through them:
  1. Have you ever told one lie (even a “white” lie)? What does that make you? A liar!
  2. Have you ever stolen something (even if it’s small)? What does that make you? A thief!
  3. Have you ever lusted after someone? “But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” (Matthew 5:28). Then you have committed adultery of the heart. Let them know that they are a lying, thieving, adulterer at heart and in big trouble, thats only 3 of the 10 Commandments.

On Judgment Day, would you be innocent or guilty? Of course, you would be found guilty and end up in Hell. (They will know that they sinned and need a Savior).

But God sent His Son to die on the Cross for you and me. Jesus took your punishment upon Himself and then rose from the grave – defeating death.

This is a powerful way of witnessing We know that God has placed the law on the sinners heart”…the work of the Law written in their hearts…” (Romans 2:15).

  • You can not mess up bad enough! – What we mean by this is that most of the work is done by the Holy Spirit. He is certainly powerful to overcome anything that you may do. This is not to say that you do not need to do your best but, like stated before, you cannot save anyone so you cannot make someone lose salvation. So relax and talk in love.

Sample prayer – Here is a sample prayer that you can suggest that a non-Christian use to accept Jesus as Lord and Savior.

“Dear God, I understand that I have broken Your Law and sinned against You. Please forgive my sins. Thank You that Jesus suffered on the cross in my place. I now place my trust in Him as my Savior and Lord.  In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

I encourage you to practice on someone you know who is saved. Or just go out a try it on non-Christian, either way your practicing (“practice makes perfect”). Once you witness to someone, whether you lead someone to the Lord or not, but feel the Holy Spirit moving through you, you will feel more encouraged to go and do it again. Remember, if that person doesn’t come know Christ as their Lord and Savior, be encouraged, you just planted a seed! And God is the only one that can grow that seed.  In your prayer, pray that God will give you boldness like a lion.
