There are two basic answers to this question.
Atheists – that is, people who believe that there is no god or “higher power” – say that we are here by accident. The materials to make to planets and stars and animals and human beings were always present and somehow came together in a way that made life possible. There are different theories about how this “coming together” happened, but they all agree that it happened by itself, without plan or purpose or meaning.
Theists – people who believe in a god or higher power (members of world religions and Christianity are all theists), say that planets and people are not here by accident, but by the choice of a supreme being. They believe that God brought us here – created us – and for some reason. We are part of someone’s plan. Therefore, our lives have a special meaning and purpose.
At this point, do you believe that the earth and stars and all living things developed by accident or by the decision of a higher power? In other words, will you decide to be an atheist or a theist?
We are all born with a deep hunger for meaning and love. Many people try to satisfy that hunger with things like power, wealth, adventure or sex. Others try to deny the hunger or bury it with drugs or a busy life-style. But there is no easy way to satisfy the hunger or hide from it. It is part of being human.
- Why are we here?
- What are we searching for?
- Do our lives really matter?
All religions respond to these questions, but they disagree about the about the answers.
The Questions of Life
We will introduce you to three different kinds of religion, based on their answers to these important questions.
- How did we get here?
- Why are we here?
- Where are we going?
The three alternatives that will be presented are atheism (the belief that there is no god or higher power), world religions (including Hinduism and Buddhism, Islam and Judaism), and Christianity.
Your own consideration of these religions and their answers to life’s most important questions may lead you to important new insights about the meaning and the purpose of your life.
