PlayStation Plus Prices Increase Across Multiple Regions

PlayStation Plus has become a bit more expensive in various regions around the world, Sony has confirmed to Joystiq. “We slightly increased prices for PlayStation Plus in South Africa, Ukraine, Russia, Turkey and India regions due to various market conditions.”

Will these price increases affect prices in North America? Sony responded to that very question saying, “Currently, price adjustments are not being planned for PS Plus in the SCEA [North American] region.”

Sony’s confirmation of price increases comes shortly after a report was published by iAfrica that stated PlayStation Plus subscription costs were going to increase within 24 hours of email notifications sent to PlayStation Plus subscribers. Judging by the emails sent to these various regions, prices look like they increased a little over 50% of their original cost.

Using a vague “various market conditions” statement to justify an over 50% increase in price will probably not bode well for customers within these regions. Hopefully Sony can give these customers a better understanding of why they need to spend more for their PlayStation Plus subscription as they can’t simply say they can’t pay the additional costs due to “various wallet-constricting conditions.”

The confirmation follows a report from iAfrica that stated subscription costs were due to rise within 24 hours of email notifications sent to PS Plus subscribers. The emails reportedly stated that “the price of a three month subscription will rise from R145 to R219” as of today ($12.88 and $19.46). The change represents a 51 percent increase in the three-month PS Plus prices. Additionally, a second email seemingly noted a change in the annual PS Plus costs in South Africa from R489 to R749 ($43.45 to $66.55, a 53 percent increase).
