There is nothing sacred about traveling great distances to evangelize and disciple others. One does not become more spiritual by entering another culture as a missionary. Each of us is called to be a missionary where we are. If we are willing to evangelize overseas, we should be willing to evangelize at home. Our unbelieving neighbor is just as lost as the unreached aborigine. We should not allow ourselves to be committed zealously to world missions without also being involved in personal evangelism. The real issue is whether or not we have a God-given passion for the souls of men.
Thank the Lord and praise Him that someone was willing to share the salvation message with us: “O Sovereign Lord! You made the heavens and earth by your strong hand and powerful arm. Nothing is too hard for you! You show unfailing love to thousands, but you also bring the consequences of one generation’s sin upon the next. You are the great and powerful God, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies. You have all wisdom and do great and mighty miracles. You see the conduct of all people, and you give them what they deserve” (Jeremiah 32:17-19).
Now pray this confession to the Lord as you seek to keep your life free from sin and in fellowship with Him: “Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins. Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin. For I recognize my rebellion; it haunts me day and night” (Psalm 51:1-3).
Confess any sins that the Holy Spirit brings to your mind. As you agree with God’s will, voice your affirmation of His Word: “I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).
As you make your requests known to the Lord, include:
- Faithfulness in sharing Christ,
- Commitment to God’s will,
- The Lord’s work in international as well as domestic missions.
Now offer this closing prayer to the Lord: “And then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and in the sea. They sang: “Blessing and honor and glory and power belong to the one sitting on the throne and to the Lamb forever and ever” (Revelation 5:13).
“But we are looking forward to the new heavens and new earth he has promised, a world filled with God’s righteousness. And so, dear friends, while you are waiting for these things to happen, make every effort to be found living peaceful lives that are pure and blameless in his sight. And remember, our Lord’s patience gives people time to be saved. This is what our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you with the wisdom God gave him— speaking of these things in all of his letters. Some of his comments are hard to understand, and those who are ignorant and unstable have twisted his letters to mean something quite different, just as they do with other parts of Scripture. And this will result in their destruction” (2 Peter 3:13-16).
